Fineprint is built so that your health information stays on your iPhone.
What stays on your phone
Camera images, photos you choose, the text read from labels, your profiles (allergies, diets, custom ingredients, names of the people you add) and your scan history. Label reading runs on the device with Apple's Vision framework. None of this is sent to us or anyone else, and there is no account. The only exceptions are the ingredient text you choose to share or send, described below.
What leaves your phone
When you look up a barcode, when a barcode is spotted in a label photo, or when recipe watch re-checks a saved product, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts, a public food database, to fetch the product's ingredients.
When you tap "Find this product," the ingredient names read from the label, plus the product name if you typed one, are sent to Open Food Facts search to find matching products. Photos are never sent, and nothing is sent unless you tap. Like any website, Open Food Facts receives your IP address with the request. Their privacy policy applies to that request.
If Open Food Facts has no ingredients for a barcode, the barcode number is sent to Fineprint's server, which looks it up in USDA FoodData Central. When a result shows a barcode product, its barcode number is also sent to Fineprint's server to check what other Fineprint users have seen for it.
Sharing product data (off unless you turn it on)
With "Share label scans" on, two things are sent to Fineprint's server: the ingredient text of a label you scanned once it's matched to a barcode, and the before and after ingredients when recipe watch finds a change. Each comes with the barcode and a random ID made for this app install, which the server stores only in scrambled (hashed) form, so one phone counts once. Photos, profiles, names, other scans and anything about you are never sent. Shared label text is shown to other Fineprint users as what a package said on a given date.
Fixing Open Food Facts
When you tap "Fix it in Open Food Facts" and then "Send," the ingredient text you checked is sent through Fineprint's server to Open Food Facts, where it replaces the product's English ingredient list and is public under the Open Database License. It's credited to the Fineprint app with the scrambled install ID, not to you. Fineprint's server keeps the barcode, that ID and a scrambled form of your IP address for a day's rate limits.
Purchases
Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We receive no payment details. The app checks your subscription status with Apple on the device.
Analytics and ads
Fineprint has no analytics, tracking, or advertising, and doesn't share or sell data.
Deleting your data
Delete individual scans in the app, or delete the app to remove everything it stored. To remove the label scans and recipe changes you shared from Fineprint's server, tap "Remove what I've shared" under Product data. Edits already made to Open Food Facts are part of that public database.
Children
Parents can add profiles for their children. Those profiles stay on the parent's phone like everything else.
